The Department of Plant Science at the University of Connecticut offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees with a concentration in Horticulture. An undergraduate minor in Ornamental Horticulture is available for students majoring in other fields. The Department of Plant Science also offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Ornamental Horticulture and Turfgrass Management through the Ratcliffe Hicks School of Agriculture. Horticulture faculty conduct research on diverse topics related to horticultural crop production, utilization of horticultural plants, plant genetic improvement, and fundamental plant biology. The Horticulture program is strongly involved in outreach to producers and the public related to the production, cultivation and use of plants. Reflecting Connecticut's status as a highly urbanized state, the emphasis of the Horticulture program is on ornanmental and environmental horticulture.
Students majoring in Horticulture should obtain fundamental knowledge about plant growth and development, the ability to identify important horticultural plants, economics, pest management, crop production and cultivation.
